Accused livestreamer also spread attackers’ white-supremacist writings, DA says
A 17-year-old North Carolina girl whose name was not released was arrested the previous week and indicted by a Forsyth County grand jury on Monday, just before she was due to begin the school year, O’Neill said at a news conference in Winston-Salem, N.C. The indictment charges her with murder by aiding and abetting in the May 18 attack at the Islamic Center.
Cain Clark, 17, and Caleb Vazquez, 18, entered the Islamic Center before being driven back outside by security guard Amin Abdullah, who exchanged gunfire with them as he initiated a lockdown, O’Neill said. The lockdown protected 140 children who were just steps away from the attack.
The pair killed Abdullah and two other men before taking their own lives in a vehicle nearby, according to O’Neill’s account. They left behind lengthy writings expressing animosity toward a wide range of people, and cited the shooter who killed 51 people at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 2019, as one of their models for the violence.
According to the allegations summarized at the news conference, the North Carolina teen recorded a livestream of the shooting and disseminated the attackers’ white-supremacist writings, O’Neill said.
