Ternus inherits AI race and $4.6 trillion company

John Ternus became Apple’s chief executive on Tuesday, assuming leadership of one of the world’s most valuable companies from Tim Cook, who held the post for 15 years. Under Cook, the company’s market value climbed to $4.6 trillion, propelled largely by the iPhone that Steve Jobs unveiled in 2007.

The transition comes as Apple faces competitive pressure in artificial intelligence. Apple has gotten off to a rough start in that race: the company has stumbled in its efforts to deliver AI features it promised nearly two years ago and now trails rivals, according to the AP.

Earlier in 2026, Apple unveiled new AI advances, including upgrades to its Siri assistant. The company emphasized privacy and everyday utility as it worked to close the gap with competitors.

Ternus, whose background is in hardware engineering, now confronts challenges that will require him to operate outside his comfort zone in that field. Beyond the AI race, he must manage supply chain questions and maintain relationships with political figures — including President Donald Trump, who offered public praise for Cook on Tuesday.
