Gold move shifts reserve distribution away from New York and Ottawa

The bank owns a total of 612.4 metric tons, equivalent to roughly 675 tons, of gold. At the end of 2025, the reserve was valued at 72.2 billion euros, according to the announcement.

Before the transfer, the combined holdings in New York and Ottawa accounted for roughly 313 metric tons — just over half of the total reserve. The redistribution does not change the overall size of the reserve but shifts where a larger share is physically stored.

De Nederlandsche Bank did not identify specific events prompting the move, instead pointing to a general climate of uncertainty. “We expect that we will never need to use them, but we do need to strengthen our resilience and preparedness,” Sleijpen said in a written statement.
