Researchers map neurons in fish’s electrical-sensing brain region

Scientists have published findings on how the elephantnose fish filters electrical noise in its brain. The recent study maps neurons in a brain region that senses electrical signals and reports that the mechanism the animal uses to filter out electrical noise is more complex than previously thought.

The elephantnose fish is native to Africa. Its specialized cerebellum-like brain has made it a subject of interest among neuroscientists, and the animal’s electrical-sensing capability has drawn particular research attention.

In the study, researchers mapped neurons in detail in the part of the brain that senses electrical signals. The mapping allowed the team to examine the mechanism the brain uses to distinguish meaningful electrical signals from background noise.

The central finding is that the brain’s noise-filtration mechanism is more intricate than researchers had previously expected. The cerebellum-like structure filters electrical noise through a process more complex than previously understood.
