Greenland Arctic security deal signing scheduled on UNGA sidelines
French President Emmanuel Macron, whom the Guardian’s Europe Live blog noted would be making his last UNGA appearance, arrived in New York ahead of the assembly’s opening and held separate talks with Trump and Zelenskyy on Sept. 21. The Guardian reported that Macron was “possibly trying to mediate ahead of the pair’s closely watched meeting later today.”
The Trump-Zelenskyy meeting was expected in the late afternoon or early evening of Sept. 22, the blog reported. The Guardian opened the day’s coverage by writing that “given the state of the world, it’s likely to be a lively one.”
The opening day’s expected addresses included Trump, Finland’s President Alexander Stubb, and Macron, “among others,” according to the Guardian.
In Brussels, EU ambassadors met on Sept. 22 to discuss the bloc’s latest Russia sanctions list. The blog reported “controversial attempts to amend it and take some fairly well-known names out of it,” with the Guardian’s author, Jakub Krupa, promising “more on that shortly.”
Outside the main assembly hall, Trump was scheduled to meet Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s government leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen to sign a new Greenland deal on Arctic security, the Guardian reported. A photograph distributed with the live blog showed Frederiksen and Nielsen visiting the 9/11 memorial and Ground Zero in New York before the signing. The Guardian previewed the encounter by writing: “Expect potentially diverging interpretations of what the deal actually involves.”
