Dozens of national delegates walked out during Netanyahu’s General Assembly address
The New York Police Department said it detained 103 people who participated in a sit-in on First Avenue, blocks from the United Nations headquarters, on a Thursday demonstration against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s appearance at the General Assembly, United Press International reported.
Video captured from the scene showed police zip-tying actress Susan Sarandon and actress Hannah Einbinder, according to UPI. The outlet identified the two actresses as participants in the sit-in.
UPI also named comedian Caleb Hearon, Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning and Democratic congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier as among those detained at the protest.
Demonstrators gathered to urge nations, including the United States, to stop offering military support to Israel for its operations in Gaza. They wore shirts and carried signs reading “End the genocide,” “Stop arming Israel” and “Fund people not bombs,” UPI reported.
The protest on First Avenue coincided with Netanyahu’s appearance at the General Assembly. Delegates from dozens of nations walked out of the room as Netanyahu took the podium, according to UPI.
Netanyahu then used his address to criticize New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, internet personality Hasan Piker and others who have voiced opposition to Israel’s military efforts in Gaza, UPI reported.
Einbinder, a star of the HBO series “Hacks,” spoke about her support for the Palestinian people during an interview at Cannes earlier this year. She noted the public stance could affect her career.
“The cost of not speaking is higher, you know?” Einbinder said, according to UPI. “There is a greater toll in not speaking, and you just gotta have your priorities straight.”
