Pike, 50, critically ill at Nashville hospital
Christa Pike’s lawyer, Randy Spivey, described Tennessee’s failed attempt to execute her as “cruel” and “torturous” in a video released Thursday by The Guardian. Pike, 50, remains in critical condition at a Nashville hospital after surviving two attempts by Tennessee to execute her by lethal injection.
“Tennessee has again demonstrated it is unable to carry out an execution with basic human dignity,” Spivey said in the video.
Pike was sentenced to death in the 1990s for a murder she committed as a teenager. Her lawyers say she has a blood disorder that complicated the procedure by making it difficult for officials to establish an intravenous line.
The Guardian reported Thursday that Tennessee has suspended executions following the failed procedure.
The 1 minute and 2 second video, published Thursday by The Guardian, is the source for Spivey’s statements about the case.
