Larson: easy fixes won’t solve issue, structural overhaul needed

The Wall Street Journal published a video explainer Friday that attributes the Colorado River’s deepening crisis to a century-old legal framework combined with an extended drought. About 40 million people rely on the Colorado River, the Journal reported, and the system has reached what the paper described as a breaking point.

The video, titled “The 100-Year-Old Math Miscalculation That Broke the Colorado River,” features Arizona State University water law professor Rhett Larson. According to the Journal, the video shows Larson breaking down where the federal government’s framework falls short, arguing that easy fixes will not solve the issue and that structural overhauls are needed to protect a crucial regional economy.

A federal plan threatening deep cuts has ignited a “political and legal war across the Southwest,” the report said. The combined pressure of the extended drought and the century-old legal framework has produced what the Journal described as breaking-point conditions.

The explainer was produced by Michael Tabb, a senior video journalist who covers technology, travel and business for the Journal’s video team in New York.
