More than 80 rescue workers search Zaporizhzhia rubble for voices
Across Ukraine, at least 19 people were killed and 46 others injured in overnight attacks, according to United Press International. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said 13 other regions of Ukraine were attacked overnight.
In Zaporizhzhia, five Russian glide bombs hit residential buildings Saturday morning, killing at least 15 people, three of whom were children, and injuring at least 16, UPI reported. More people were missing and believed to be under the rubble.
Twenty-six residential buildings were damaged in the city, the Kyiv Independent reported. “The ground floor was hit, and the floors above just collapsed,” the BBC reported acting Mayor Regina Kharchenko told Ukrainian television.
Kharchenko said more than 80 rescue workers were on the scene and listening for voices of those who might be stuck under the rubble.
Zaporizhzhia has more than 700,000 residents and is less than 10 miles from the front line.
Zelensky said the strikes were Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “thanks” for President Donald Trump’s lifting sanctions on Russian diesel. “Last night confirmed once again that in Russia, they take any easing of pressure to mean they can keep fighting, to mean they can keep dropping bombs on cities,” Zelensky posted on X. “Different signals are needed. Russia must understand that it needs to stop the war, and for that to happen, Russia must feel its losses. Right now, it is our long-range capabilities that are ensuring this. And we will respond to Russian strikes. I thank everyone who is helping.”
