Hanson-Young suggests fines for platforms that show execution stream

Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young has written to the eSafety commissioner, Julie Inman Grant, and the communications minister, Anika Wells, seeking assurance that the live stream of a US firing squad execution will not be shown in Australia.

The Greens are pushing the Albanese government to ensure the execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan cannot be viewed in the country.

US secretary of defense Pete Hegseth said last week that the public would be able to watch the execution, which is scheduled for 3 December.

In her letters, Hanson-Young suggested large fines could apply to digital platforms if they showed the stream or did not take steps to block the video at a later date.

“I think this is incredibly shocking and barbaric, and Australians don’t want this on our screens,” Hanson-Young told the ABC.
