Vatican sets surgery for early next week with weeklong recovery

Pope Leo XIV made the announcement during prayer at St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican on Sunday, Oct. 11, saying doctors found the “localized nodule” during a recent health exam, CNN reported. The American pontiff said the surgery was scheduled to take place in “the coming days.”

“It was detected at a very early stage and is well localized,” Leo said in an appearance from the Apostolic Palace. “The doctors believe it is best to intervene, so, following their advice, I have decided to undergo surgery to have it removed.”

The Vatican said the surgery would take place early next week and would require a weeklong stay in the hospital for recovery.

“I entrust myself to your prayers,” Leo said.

NBC News reported that lung nodules are small, dense masses on the lungs that are typically benign.
