AP and Fox first reported the federal search, citing DoJ statement
President Donald Trump and key allies have discussed denaturalizing Representative Ilhan Omar, a Minnesota Democrat, and expelling her from the country, according to the Guardian. The Guardian reported the discussion in an account of federal agents from Homeland Security Investigations searching Omar’s Washington, D.C., residence on Monday morning under a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice.
The Associated Press and Fox News first reported the search, both citing a Department of Justice statement. “Today in the Washington, DC area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice. This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal investigation,” a DoJ spokesperson told Fox News Digital. The Guardian characterized the operation as a criminal fraud investigation in its account of the AP and Fox News reports.
A video posted by Fox News showed what appeared to be law enforcement in HSI jackets at what the outlet said was Omar’s Washington, D.C., residence. Neither Omar’s office, the Department of Justice, the Department of Homeland Security, nor the White House responded to the Guardian’s requests for comment, and the nature of the warrant was not publicly disclosed. Fox News, citing unnamed sources familiar with the matter, reported that agents were examining immigration paperwork Omar’s father filled out when she was a child.
President Donald Trump and key allies have publicly accused Omar of fraudulently obtaining her citizenship, according to the Guardian. Omar has consistently denied the accusations. Trump has repeatedly raised the allegations in public comments, according to the Guardian.
Omar and Representative Rashida Tlaib became the United States’s first Muslim congresswomen in 2019, according to the Guardian.
The federal search came about three weeks before this year’s midterm elections.
