Suspect killed by community member who followed him into school
Three children and one teacher were killed in a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday, local police said.
The children who died were ages 5, 8 and 11, according to Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz. Two additional people — a 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher — were critically injured and taken to a hospital, Krantz said, bringing the total number of people shot to at least six.
The suspect, a 16-year-old who lived in Bend, was shot and killed by a community member who followed the shooter into the school, police said.
Steven Cook, superintendent of the Bend-La Pine Schools district, which includes Silver Rail Elementary, said: “We are heartbroken. We are horrified.”
Police said they were called about 1 p.m. to the school, with initial reports of a shooter firing into a car. Minutes later, emergency calls were made about a shooter inside the school, according to police.
