Family, represented by Ben Crump, seeks release of surveillance footage
The Mississippi Attorney General’s Office on Monday said it had completed its review of the June 14, 2026 incident in Senatobia and found the officer’s use of force justified.
“Today, the Office of the Attorney General announced it has completed the review of a June 14, 2026 incident in Senatobia involving one officer with the Senatobia Police Department,” the office said in a statement. “In this incident, the Attorney General’s Office found the use of force was justified.”
Kohen was killed in the parking lot of a Walmart store in Senatobia. Police officers had responded to the store after being called about someone shoplifting diapers, and Kohen was being held by his mother inside a vehicle. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation said the driver of the vehicle, Kohen’s aunt, drove toward the police officers and struck one of them. An officer then fired on the vehicle, hitting the driver and fatally shooting Kohen. The officer who shot and killed Kohen was placed on administrative leave after the shooting.
An independent autopsy report found that Kohen’s death was a homicide. His family, represented by civil rights attorney Ben Crump, is seeking the release of surveillance footage from the Walmart and the bureau of investigation.
The Mississippi Legislative Black Caucus in August called for accountability from law enforcement over Kohen’s death.
“Kohen Wiley was only one year old,” said Kabir Karriem, chairman of the Mississippi Legislative Black Caucus. “His family deserves answers, respect, and the assurance that the institutions investigating his death are accountable to the people they serve.”
