Democratic socialists set to run two largest cities and the nation’s capital

Los Angeles voters elected City Council member Nithya Raman as mayor on Tuesday, unseating incumbent Mayor Karen Bass in a race the Associated Press called, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Raman is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, the Journal reported. She comes to the mayor’s office from a seat on the City Council.

Bass, a longtime Democratic politician, issued a concession statement and congratulated Raman on her victory, according to the Journal.

The Journal reported that Bass’s popularity fell sharply following the 2025 wildfires that destroyed parts of the city.

With Raman’s win, democratic-socialist mayors are set to run the two largest U.S. cities and the nation’s capital, the Journal reported, following what it described as a blue wave that swept the country on Tuesday.
