I have to be at work by 6 a.m. No one sent me home. No one asked if I felt like it. I show up because the kids need shoes and the co-pay isn’t paying itself.
But the people who ran on “we’ll show up for you” — the 219-seat Republican “mandate” — can’t even drag themselves to a procedural vote. Speaker Mike Johnson had to send the whole House home early for the Fourth of July because Rep. Anna Paulina Luna led a dozen-plus holdouts to block a routine vote. Seven Republicans just didn’t show. Seven. That’s not a quorum problem, that’s a shit-or-get-off-the-pot problem.
The rest of the picture is uglier: about three dozen House Republicans aren’t coming back next term. Half are running for something else. Rep. Kevin Hern is off campaigning for Senate in Oklahoma. Rep. Nancy Mace lost her governor’s bid and is now a “menace.” Rep. Tom Kean Jr. was out nearly four months hospitalized for depression. Rep. Neal Dunn’s been missing votes for illness.
You know who else was sick and tired? Me. At the Walmart register. At the kitchen table doing the math. But I still clocked in. I still voted. I still did my goddamn job.
These elephant-branded cowards ran on “we’ll drain the swamp” and “America First” and “we’ll deliver.” What they delivered is a zombie Congress that can’t pass a bipartisan spending bill, can’t get to the farm bill, can’t move defense policy — and is now trying to jam through a third reconciliation package to bypass Democrats entirely because they can’t be bothered to do the basic work. What a load of bullshit.
The White House says this is just normal end-of-term energy. Normal. Right. Normal is finishing the job. Normal is not dangling “future roles” in the administration to keep members in line. That last part isn’t leadership. That’s a leash.
I don’t have a White House offering me a job if I keep my mouth shut. I have a union hall my grandfather built, and a family that needed the bargain these freedom-frying hypocrites broke.
Family values? The family-values party can’t even show up to work. Take the flag pin off before you go home, you donor-owned dickweeds. You didn’t drain the swamp. You are the goddamn swamp.
