They stood on the debate stage and swore up and down they were going to protect your family. They told you the other guys wanted to ruin your healthcare. They said they had a plan for lower costs, for personal responsibility, for taking care of the working man and his sick kid.
Bullshit.
The Trump administration and the Republican congressmen who cheered them on just let the clock run out on the enhanced ACA subsidies. They didn’t pass a better plan. They didn’t lower your premiums. They just let the lifeline snap and walked away.
Now we have the receipt. Two point six million Americans lost their ACA coverage this year. Two point six million people woke up in February without the help they were counting on to keep their insurance.
And look at the states that bought the GOP’s snake oil the hardest. Ohio and Oklahoma each lost nearly a third of their enrollees. A third of the people who relied on those subsidies are now staring at a bill they can’t pay or a fucking empty insurance card.
They call it “letting the market work.” They call it “fiscal responsibility.” I call it looking a mother in the eye, telling her her kid’s insulin is covered, and then quietly voting to pull the subsidy out from under her when the cameras stop rolling.
You want to know what “family values” looks like to the donor-owned dickweeds in Washington? It looks like a 30 percent coverage drop in the states that voted for them, while they sit on their asses and call it a win.
They didn’t fix the system. They just made sure you couldn’t afford to be in it.
