The Magnolia Mother's Trust exists because Black mothers in Mississippi can't get a pizza for their kids on what the country pays them — and the 'big, beautiful bill' is making it worse.

I am a mother from a small town. I worked part-time at Walmart for years while my kids needed me home. I know exactly what it feels like when the country that tells you to work hard won’t pay you enough to keep a kid fed.

But at least I had a system that, in theory, was supposed to catch me if I fell. Medicaid. School lunches. WIC. Whatever broken safety net existed, it was there. These women in Jackson, Mississippi don’t even have that working for them. They have Aisha Nyandoro. They have a private charity called Springboard to Opportunities mailing them a thousand dollars a month so their kids don’t go hungry. That is the country telling Black mothers exactly what it thinks of them: the system was built to keep you out, and when it works as designed, some private donor has to send the goddamn check.

The Magnolia Mother’s Trust is nine years old. The longest-running guaranteed income program in the country. Nine years running, because a Mississippi nonprofit had to invent a workaround for the country that won’t pay Black mothers a living wage. Twenty moms in the first cohort. Now they’re picking the ninth. Aisha Nyandoro started it because a mother she was working with couldn’t afford pizza for her kids. Pizza. That was the moment. A woman who works and raises children still couldn’t buy a fucking pizza for her family.

This is what the ‘big, beautiful bill’ is for. This is what the post-affirmative-action anti-DEI push is for. To make sure the system that couldn’t pay these mothers in the first place cuts the last thread of what little help there was. The mothers in this year’s cohort are ‘more stressed’ because they can see the safety net being pulled out from under them while the same politicians who talk about ‘family values’ pat themselves on the back for cutting it.

Family values. The family value they respect is the one where a Black mother in Mississippi waits on a private charity’s check because the country that stole her labor won’t pay her enough to live.

Take the flag pin off before you rob the family, you sanctimonious fuckers. The system that couldn’t pay her built the charity that has to. The receipt says it all.
