I did everything they told us to do. I voted for the guy who promised he’d fix it. I believed the speech about the forgotten man, about bringing the jobs back, about the family wage.
Here’s what happened: prices went up 3.5 percent. Wages went up 3.5 percent. That is a fucking zero. The grocery store costs the same. The gas station costs more. The mortgage is still too expensive. The stock market is up — good for the people who already have enough.
Three-quarters of voters say the economy is in fair or poor shape. Not because they’re not paying attention. Because they are. The Republican pollster Mitchell Brown said it himself — voters know exactly, to the dollar, what their power bill costs, what the health insurance won’t cover, what the beef costs. And they are shit out of luck.
So what does the White House do? They blame Iran. They say the war with Iran is driving gas prices up and that it’ll be “transitory.” That word has been doing a lot of heavy lifting since 2021 and it’s doing it again. The political scientist John Sides at Vanderbilt said it plain: the specific economic circumstances are not really an inheritance from a previous administration. They are due to very specific decisions that this administration has made. The tariffs and the war are theirs.
One in five Republican-leaning voters is at risk of staying home. That’s not because they’ve become Democrats. That’s because they were promised something and got nothing. They were promised relief and got a lecture about patience.
The party that sold you the economy is losing the economy because they never gave a shit about your economy. They gave a shit about their donors, their tariffs, their war, and their tax cuts that went to the people who already had enough. Eat shit. You knew exactly what you were doing.
