They deported the Holocaust survivors' caregivers. The donor class got the moral grade.

I did everything they told us to do. The Haitian workers in Florida did it for twenty goddamn years — bathed Holocaust survivors, dosed out meds at 6 a.m., showed up when the family was already gone and the patient was still calling for theirs. They held the hands of people who remember what an administration lecturing about “program integrity” has no business pretending to remember.

July 27, the Trump administration ended their TPS. Because the program had “become permanent.” Because some wingnut think-tank needed “one-strike-you’re-out” theater to feel righteous for a week.

Here is what program integrity actually looks like in Miami-Dade. Two home-care agencies shut down. Eighteen caregivers fired from Jewish Community Services — the same outfit caring for four hundred Holocaust survivors. Seven out of a luxury senior home in Naples. Twenty open slots at a Catholic nursing home in New York, sign-on bonuses tripled to six grand. A nonprofit CEO saying “we have no choice” because the patients still need bathing.

That’s the document. Read it in the bathtub instead of the podium.

The donor-class answer, straight from the Center for Immigration Studies, is that this will “raise wages” for American-born workers. What bullshit. You fire the worker who did the job for twenty years so a CEO can run a press release about how wages are finally going up in the sector the same donor class gutted with private equity. The senior still gets the same bath. The aide still gets the same fourteen dollars an hour. The Holocaust survivor still wants the same person. Only the work authorization went away.

Families didn’t ask for this. Patients didn’t ask for this. Caregivers didn’t ask for this. The only people who wanted it were the ones who got to feel moral about it for a news cycle and the donor network that’s been pushing this cut for a decade.

So when the administration says the program “became permanent,” what they mean is: the workers became essential. The patients became dependent. The families got used to a person. And you can’t deport the moral grade, so you deport the person.

Holocaust survivors. Twenty-year caregivers. Effective July 27.

The cruelty is the policy. The donor class is the receipt. The Trump administration is the signature on the form.
