I did everything they told us to do. My granddad worked a union job at the foundry in Adams, and a man could cover his family with that. A woman could raise her kids and the insurance came with him. That’s the bargain. That’s what got sold to people like us for fifty goddamn years.

Now a 19-year-old in Roundup, Montana — five years out from childhood Hodgkin lymphoma, intestines partly removed, hands too swollen some days to grip a fork — opens a letter from the state health department saying her Medicaid disability coverage is gone. Her cancer is in remission. Her body isn’t. They didn’t even fucking call her doctors. They decided without asking the people who actually treat her.

That’s not a glitch. That’s the machine.

The Trump administration and Congressional Republicans wrote the One Big Beautiful Bill Act last year and sold it as protecting the neediest. What it does: 18.5 million people have to prove they’re working, studying, or volunteering to keep Medicaid. Over 5 million are expected to lose coverage by 2034, per the Congressional Budget Office. The federal government gave states $200 million to set up the medical-exemption machinery — for comparison, the Social Security Administration spends more than $5 billion a year running disability reviews for about 7 million people.

They knew this would fail. They built the fucking thing to fail.

That young woman’s mom drives her two hours each way to Billings three times a week for therapy. Without Medicaid she can’t afford the treatment that manages the damage the cancer did. She re-applied for Social Security disability just to keep the coverage that was already hers — because the alternative is a labyrinth of paperwork the state can’t even run honestly.

My kids don’t have coverage either. I know what that letter feels like. I know what the kitchen table looks like when the options are pills or groceries. I know what the appeal paperwork looks like when the state has decided you don’t count.

They are not protecting the neediest. They are stripping the neediest and calling it reform. Take the flag pin off before you sign the next work-requirement piece of shit. Go to hell, you Medicare-slashing motherfuckers.
