Three states plan same-day executions, first in nearly 16 years
  • Tennessee, Alabama and Oklahoma plan to execute inmates Thursday, which would mark the first same-day execution of three people in the United States in nearly 16 years.
  • Robin Maher, executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center, said three executions on one day is highly unusual but largely a scheduling coincidence.
  • Eleven states executed a total of 47 people in 2025, the highest number since 2009, with Florida accounting for 19 of them.
  • The 19 executions so far in 2026 have occurred in four states, and Florida, again leading the country, executed two inmates on the same day in July.
