  • A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers is pressing the Army to explain why it told the 173rd Airborne Brigade to stop specializing in drone warfare.
  • The 173rd, set up in November with about 600 soldiers to deploy wherever uncrewed systems were needed, was building its own drones and practicing tactics pioneered by Ukraine against Russia and employed by Iran against U.S. forces.
  • "We have deep concerns that eliminating this specialized drone unit will limit our ability to learn from allies, particularly the Ukrainian Armed Forces, and hinder our efforts to modernize drone warfare at the speed necessary to compete on the modern battlefield," the lawmakers wrote to Army leadership.
  • The order halting the unit's drone focus comes as modern battlefields increasingly rely on uncrewed systems and drone warfare has killed and wounded American troops.

  • Ukrainian drone operators from the 412th Regiment of Unmanned Systems Forces (Nemesis) eliminated a U.S. armored brigade during the Combined Resolve exercise in Germany held in April and May, according to people familiar with the events.
  • The roughly 3,500 U.S. personnel, primarily from the 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, sent armored vehicles into battle that threw up dust, allowing Ukrainian reconnaissance drones to spot them before explosive and first-person-view drones struck.
  • Ukrainian drones eliminated U.S. units so quickly that they had to be "re-spawned" — sent back into the exercise as new forces — to keep the drill going, a U.S. official briefed on the exercise said.
  • The drill is the third recent war game in which Ukrainian drone teams defeated NATO-allied forces, following a May 2025 Baltic exercise and a Swedish-led NATO drill earlier this year, officials said.
