A suspect who shot two people at a Wilmington, Delaware, hospital on Tuesday afternoon remained at large Tuesday night, authorities said. One of the victims died.
Wilmington Police Chief Wilfredo Campos said the shooting was reported around 3:30 p.m. at the hospital. Campos declined to release the victims’ identities or the condition of the person who was shot and survived during a press conference. Investigators were working to identify and find the shooter and determine how the person left the building, he said.
ChristianaCare, which operates the hospital, said in an emailed statement it was diverting patients from its emergency department and “taking all appropriate steps to ensure the safety of our patients, caregivers and visitors.” The statement described the situation as an “active police investigation for a possible active shooter.”
A lockdown of the hospital was lifted by Tuesday night.
Violence has been a persistent problem at hospitals across the US.
Wilmington, which has about 71,000 residents and is Delaware’s largest city, is about 25 miles south of Philadelphia.
