Trump requests $87.6 billion for Iran war, adding to legislative pile
Speaker Mike Johnson sent House lawmakers home early last week after internal divisions prevented votes on two spending bills and a veterans’ benefits measure, according to the Associated Press. The failed votes highlighted the divisions in Johnson’s Republican ranks as the November elections approach.
In the meantime, President Donald Trump submitted a request for $87.6 billion in new spending, with the bulk of the funds designated for the ongoing war with Iran, adding to the list of legislative priorities Johnson must address.
Johnson told Fox News Channel’s “Sunday Morning Futures” that Republicans have more work ahead. “We have got a lot more to do. We have got to keep it going,” Johnson said.
The week ahead could signal whether Johnson can turn the remaining summer work period into a productive stretch that Republicans can cite when they face voters in November, according to the AP. Johnson has also received a social media assist from Trump as he works to ease the divisions in his Republican ranks.
