U.S. working to identify remains after Jordan missile strike
The death added to what has already been one of the deadliest weeks for U.S. forces in the conflict with Iran, Centcom said.
A second service member was wounded during the incident and is receiving medical treatment, the command said.
Separately, the U.S. military is working to identify human remains at a base in Jordan where a missile struck this weekend, Centcom said. The remains are believed to be of a service member who went missing after the strike, according to a person familiar with the matter. If confirmed, it would bring to three the number of U.S. troops killed in that strike. The missile attack in Jordan also resulted in several injuries.
Before this week, the Pentagon had reported that 14 American service members had died in the conflict with Iran due to hostile actions or accidents.
Centcom said it is withholding additional information, including the identities of the missing and fallen service members, out of respect for the families during the notification process.
The rising casualty count comes amid an escalating exchange of fire between the U.S. and Iran during which both sides have sought to attack increasingly sensitive targets.
