Greek police arrest suspect moments after Acropolis stabbing
Two American tourists were stabbed Tuesday morning near the southern entrance of the Acropolis archaeological site in Athens, Greek police said. A suspect was arrested at the scene, and authorities said they have not announced a motive.
The attack occurred around 8 a.m. local time, according to police. Officers received a call about a man with a knife threatening people at the entrance to the site, one of the busiest tourist destinations in the city. When police arrived, they overpowered the suspect and took him into custody.
The victims are reportedly Greek-Americans, police said. The woman sustained a minor injury to her arm, and the man suffered a more serious injury to his leg, according to authorities. Police officers from a motorcycle unit who arrived first at the scene bandaged the man’s leg to stop the bleeding before an ambulance transported the couple to a local hospital.
The incident took place during Athens’ peak summer tourism season. Acropolis site operations did not appear to be affected, police said.
