Duffy asks Congress to rename New York's Penn Station

Letter to Senate leadership stops short of specifying new name for the nation’s busiest rail hub

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy urged the U.S. Senate in a letter Wednesday to authorize renaming New York’s Penn Station as part of the administration’s priorities for the transit hub’s projected $8 billion federal redesign, according to a copy of the letter obtained by the Associated Press.

The request, which seeks congressional funding for the rehabilitation and other major transportation priorities, did not specify what the nation’s busiest rail hub should be called. Duffy has previously said he would welcome seeing President Donald Trump’s name on the station’s facade, the AP reported.

Transportation Department spokespersons provided the letter to reporters but did not respond to follow-up questions Thursday, the AP said.

Duffy’s letter identified renaming Penn Station as one of his listed “administration priorities” for the federal rebuilding of the busiest rail hub in the western hemisphere, according to the AP. The letter was addressed to Senate leadership on multiple committees, the AP reported.
