Third fatal shooting in same neighborhood since 2012
A Madison police officer fatally shot Corey Ruiz on July 22 after what the Associated Press described as a brief scuffle at a city street intersection, yards from a 52-year-old food co-op that the AP placed in “the heart of the city’s most liberal neighborhood.”
According to the AP, the shooting is the third time since 2012 that Madison police have killed someone in the same neighborhood. The agency reported that the shooting has sparked renewed calls for police reforms and forced Madison — a city the AP said is 70% white — to once again reckon with calls from the Black community to address racial justice issues.
The AP reported that Ruiz is identified as Black or Latino in Wisconsin court records. The shooting has disrupted some of the largest and most popular summertime events in the city, the agency reported.
