Remnants of German Black Sea fleet resurface near Prahovo, Serbia
The Danube, Europe’s second-longest river, has fallen so low that power plants along its banks are nearing operational shutdowns, the Associated Press reported. Governments across Europe are implementing measures to conserve electricity as the waterway’s flow diminishes.
The receding river has also revealed dozens of German warships sunk near the Serbian port of Prahovo toward the end of World War II. German forces scuttled the vessels, part of their Black Sea fleet, while withdrawing as Soviet troops advanced deeper into Europe, AP said.
Some of the wrecks remain loaded with munitions, and a rusty hull and a broken mast stand in the riverbed where a Nazi flag once flew, according to the wire service.
