Stolen items led police to Williams during July arrest, sheriff says
STATESVILLE, N.C. — A Georgia man has been charged with burglarizing the home of former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle after learning that Biffle and his family had died in a December plane crash, Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell said Tuesday. Terrell Williams, 44, faces charges including second-degree burglary, safe cracking and money laundering, Campbell said at a news conference. Williams is being held without bond in Cobb County, Georgia, on suspicion of another home burglary, and jail records did not list an attorney for him.
The charges stem from a break-in at Biffle’s home on January 8 in which $30,000 in cash, two Glock handguns, NASCAR memorabilia and gold and silver coins were stolen, according to the sheriff’s office.
Campbell said investigators were led to Williams in July, when Cobb County police arrested him on an unrelated suspected home burglary and recovered items taken from Biffle’s home.
Williams faces charges of second-degree burglary, safe cracking, money laundering and other felonies, Campbell said. He is being held in Cobb County without bond on suspicion of another home burglary. Jail records did not list an attorney for him.
The Dec. 18 plane crash killed Biffle, his wife, his two children and three others. The accident remains under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.
The break-in at Biffle’s home was reported on January 8, about three weeks after the crash. Williams remained in custody in Cobb County as of Tuesday.
