Endangerment of UVU event attendees also disputed as aggravating factor
Prosecutors in the Charlie Kirk murder case pointed Tuesday to an engraved bullet inscription as evidence that the defendant acted out of political animus. The inscription read “Hey Facist! CATCH!” — prosecutors argued that the wording demonstrates Robinson targeted Kirk for how the defendant perceived his politics.
The prosecution and defense have filed dueling documents focused on whether the crime included aggravating factors that would make Robinson eligible for the death penalty if convicted. One such factor is political targeting — whether Robinson acted out of political animus could be key for prosecutors seeking the death penalty, or for his attorneys in taking that punishment off the table.
A second aggravating factor in dispute is whether the shooting endangered the thousands of others who attended Kirk’s September 10 event at Utah Valley University. The filings contest that factor as well.
Robinson is charged with crimes including aggravated murder and has not yet entered a plea. The 23-year-old defendant turned himself in one day after the shooting.
