Starlink launches from Florida will shift to Starship, SpaceX says
The launch was SpaceX’s 100th Falcon 9 mission of 2026. The rocket lifted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, carrying 29 Starlink internet satellites; about 8.5 minutes after liftoff, B1067 touched down on a droneship in the Atlantic Ocean as the upper stage continued on to low Earth orbit.
B1067 first entered service in June 2021 and has now completed more flights than any other SpaceX first-stage booster. Nine of the company’s boosters have flown at least 30 missions each.
The Falcon 9 has logged nearly 700 launches since first flying in 2010, with every one of its 165 missions in 2025 completing successfully.
Reusing the boosters makes the rockets cheaper and more efficient to launch, according to the company. Competitors have pursued reusable booster landings, but as of Tuesday’s launch, SpaceX remained the only operator regularly recovering boosters.
With more than 11,000 Starlink satellites now in orbit, SpaceX operates the largest satellite constellation so far.
Tuesday’s launch is expected to be the final Falcon 9 mission from Florida. “From here on, Starlink missions out of Florida will fly on Starship,” Kiko Dontchev, SpaceX’s vice president of launch operations, wrote in a social media post. “The West Coast team will continue regularly launching Starlink from Vandenberg,” referring to Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
Starship, designed to be fully reusable and capable of launching multiple times per day, has not yet flown in orbit. The next Starship launch is expected in mid-September from Texas. If that test succeeds, SpaceX plans to launch Starship from Florida next.
“Once Starship is flying reliably several times a week, it makes sense to shift … production resources to Starship to get launch rate to several times per day,” CEO Elon Musk wrote Saturday on social media.
