Federal judge to weigh Minnesota bid to keep ICE agent jailed in Texas

Castro charged with assault and false crime reporting in Jan. 14 shooting

Christian Castro, an agent for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, is charged in Minnesota with assault and falsely reporting a crime in the Jan. 14 wounding of 24-year-old Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis, the Associated Press reported. Castro is accused of firing his weapon through a house door, striking Sosa-Celis in his leg, and then providing a false account of the circumstances, according to the AP. The Minnesota filing includes both the assault and false-reporting counts.

Castro has been held in Brownsville, Texas, a city on the U.S.-Mexico border, since his arrest, while Minnesota authorities have sought his extradition, the AP reported. Under Texas law, Castro must be released after 90 days of detention, and that 90-day mark falls on Thursday, according to the AP.

Minnesota’s governor and attorney general have filed suit asking a federal judge to compel Texas to return Castro to their state and to bar the Cameron County sheriff from releasing him until extradition is completed, the AP reported. A federal judge is set to weigh Minnesota’s request Thursday.
