Fourth District Judge Steven Hippler set the procedural timeline Wednesday for Bryan Kohberger’s attempt to withdraw his guilty plea in the 2022 murders of four University of Idaho students, warning attorneys on both sides that any new evidence in the case will be held to a strict legal standard.

In a written order issued Wednesday morning, Hippler outlined how the case will proceed as Kohberger seeks to undo the plea that put him behind bars for life. The judge did not immediately grant Kohberger a hearing on his withdrawal claims. Instead, Hippler scheduled a date in June 2027 to be used in case he determines an evidentiary hearing is warranted, according to the Associated Press, which first reported the order.

Kohberger, 31, is serving four consecutive life sentences without parole for the murders of Kaylee Goncalves, Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle and Madison Mogen. The four University of Idaho students were killed in 2022 in a rental home near the Moscow, Idaho campus. In exchange for Kohberger’s guilty plea last year, prosecutors agreed not to seek the death penalty. Hippler, who sentenced Kohberger to life in prison without parole after the plea was entered, will continue to preside over the post-conviction proceedings.
