Treasury denies G20 finance meeting credentials to select reporters

Bessent says denial ‘has nothing to do with point of view’

The U.S. Treasury Department has denied credentials to individual reporters from The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Bloomberg News for the Group of 20 finance ministers’ meeting in Asheville, North Carolina, the Times reported.

The Treasury Department has not publicly explained the decision. In an interview Sunday with the Associated Press, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the exclusion “has nothing to do with point of view.”

The blocked reporters include New York Times reporter Alan Rappeport, who has covered Treasury and G20 meetings since 2017, according to the Times. Another Times reporter, Berlin bureau chief Jim Tankersley, was granted access to the meeting.

The Associated Press described the exclusion as the latest example of media-access restrictions by President Donald Trump’s administration.
