Constitution bars third term despite Trump’s 2028 talk
President Donald Trump has begun describing life after the White House in recent speeches, telling an audience on Long Island, New York, this month that he expects to be sitting around watching television while his successor claims credit for his administration’s accomplishments.
“Your next president is going to say, ‘What a great job I did,’” Trump said at the Long Island event. “He’ll be sitting around, watching television. A real stiff. Unless you vote Republican, of course.”
The comments come as Trump has continued to publicly raise the prospect of a third presidential run. He has posted about mounting another campaign and worn 2028 caps, while acknowledging that the Constitution prohibits another term.
Trump’s current term is set to end in January 2029. Midterm elections are nine weeks away.
The Constitution’s bar on a third presidential term has been a recurring backdrop for Trump’s commentary. He has periodically discussed ways to make a third run happen while conceding the prohibition.
