Search underway off Red Bays, North Andros, Bahamas police say
A small plane carrying four family members en route from the Bahamas to Florida went missing on Monday, the U.S. Coast Guard and authorities in the Bahamas said.
The aircraft departed Great Harbour Cay in the Bahamas and was heading to Miami Executive Airport in Miami-Dade County, according to a statement from Bahamas police.
“Police on the island of Andros are coordinating efforts to locate an aircraft believed to have crash-landed off the coast of Red Bays, North Andros,” the agency said.
Family members identified the four people aboard. Silvia Larrieu, the niece of the pilot, said in a video statement shared by WSVN-TV in Miami that her uncle, Mario Lamar, was piloting the plane.
The other passengers were Lamar’s wife, Lily Lamar, and two of his grandchildren, Christian Sosa and Sophie Sosa, according to Larrieu.
Larrieu appealed to anyone in the area to report any sightings of the aircraft. “Whether it’s by plane, by boat, any signs that you’ve noticed, to help us find them and bring them back alive,” she said.
The Bahamas police statement did not provide additional details about the aircraft type or the circumstances of its disappearance.
