Treasurer names housing, online misogyny as factors
Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers told ABC’s 7.30 program that the Albanese government is committed to doing “everything we can” to address domestic violence, following a weekend of violence in New South Wales, the Guardian reported.
Chalmers made the comments to ABC’s 7.30 program last night, the Guardian reported, after a mother allegedly fatally stabbed a child and wounded two others in the Blue Mountains and, separately, three other women were allegedly murdered inside their homes across the state.
The treasurer cited expert views that a lack of accessible housing played a role in domestic violence, and pointed to what he called the “magnitude” of misogynistic content online as another factor.
Chalmers said front line staffing was crucial to the government’s response. He said he was coordinating with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Women’s Minister Katy Gallagher to ensure police and related services received the resourcing they need.
“I work closely with the prime minister and [women’s minister] Katy Gallagher and the relevant ministers to make sure that police and others get the resourcing they need, working with state governments,” Chalmers said.
