Philadelphia TRACON’s backup line cut in New Jersey
Airspace above the New York City airports has reopened after the disruption.
Verizon said in a statement: “We have a fiber cable running adjacent to an Amtrak rail line in New Jersey. Construction contractors working in the area dug up and cut our cable. We and our partners are actively working to repair the damaged cable and restore connectivity as quickly as possible.”
The damaged stretch of communications line spans roughly 600 feet between New Brunswick and Newark.
Separately, Philadelphia air traffic control was dealing with a blown circuit at its TRACON facility on the same day. When its backup system kicked in, controllers discovered that the backup line had also been cut in New Jersey.
The disruption coincides with the United Nations General Assembly meeting this week in New York City, which begins Tuesday.
