Critics contend database could disenfranchise eligible voters ahead of midterms
The Guardian reported Friday that the justices granted the Trump administration’s request to lift a lower-court order that had restricted state officials from using Social Security numbers and other information to verify the citizenship status of registered voters against federal records. The order had halted the citizenship checks.
The administration has claimed the expanded database aims to combat voting by noncitizens. President Trump has separately sought to impose tougher restrictions on voting ahead of November’s midterm elections.
Critics have contended the database could lead to the disenfranchisement of eligible voters.
