Power outages hit 28,000 in New Jersey, 13,000 in New York
Leighton Brown, 56, a New York City Housing Authority employee, died Saturday after being struck by a falling tree at Cypress Hills Houses in Brooklyn during a nor’easter that has stalled over the region, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said.
“My thoughts are with his entire family as they deal with this unimaginable loss,” Mamdani said in a post on X. “May he rest in peace, and may his service to our city never be forgotten.”
The death came as the storm system stalled around the Jersey Shore on Sunday, The Weather Channel reported, as cited by UPI, leading to major coastal flooding, high surf and rip currents stretching from North Carolina to Boston and the tri-state area. The Weather Channel also reported, as cited by UPI, that a full moon Saturday likely worsened the coastal flooding.
Four other people were injured by falling trees during the storm, and emergency officials were searching for a missing swimmer off the south shore of Long Island amid the weather, CNN reported. The New York City Parks Department had received some 400 reports of downed trees by the end of Saturday, CBS News reported.
The New York Times reported, as cited by UPI, that nearly 28,000 customers were without power in New Jersey and 13,000 in the Rockaways and on Long Island, New York. The storm is expected to remain stalled through Monday, with a forecast of 1 inch to 3 inches of additional rain Sunday, according to UPI.
