Andrew Bailey resigns as FBI co-deputy director after roughly a year

Resignation comes amid firings and departures of hundreds of FBI agents

The Trump administration tapped Bailey, a former Missouri attorney general, in August 2025 to serve as co-deputy director of the FBI — an arrangement in which two people had never previously shared the role. At the bureau, Bailey oversaw some election-related matters, including personally appearing at a January search of the main election office in Fulton County, Ga.

Bailey’s resignation comes amid rapid changes under Patel that have included the firings and departures of hundreds of experienced agents and a sharp shift in the bureau’s traditional national security priorities toward violent crime and immigration, people familiar with the matter said.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
