Two US Navy aviators ejected Monday while landing on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower aircraft carrier off Virginia, and four sailors aboard the ship were injured in what Navy officials characterized as a “mishap.”

The aviators, assigned to Carrier Air Wing 3, successfully ejected as “a mishap occurred during aircraft recovery operations,” the Navy said in a short statement. Both were recovered by search and rescue personnel and returned to the carrier.

Both aviators were under the care of medical personnel aboard the ship, the Navy said.

The four shipboard personnel also were receiving medical care, the Navy said, including one who was transported to a hospital in the Norfolk, Virginia, area for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The Navy did not identify which type of two-seater aircraft was involved in the accident, nor did it say what happened to the plane or what might have caused the incident. The Navy did not immediately respond to a request for further details.

The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower is a nuclear-powered Nimitz-class carrier commissioned in 1977.
