At least 355 US mass shootings recorded in 2026, archive says

Two people were killed and at least 25 others injured when a shooting broke out just after 1 a.m. Sunday at a homecoming block party attended by more than 1,000 people in Vienna, Georgia, local officials said. The day before, a 12-year-old bystander was killed and three others wounded near a youth football event in Baltimore, police said.

In the Georgia shooting, shots were fired at about 50 people in two locations about a block apart, Peavy told WMAZ. About 25 people were taken to the hospital, though as many as 35 may have been wounded, the sheriff said. Deputies were monitoring the crowd at the time of the shooting.

The two people killed at the Georgia scene were not immediately identified, and no suspects or possible motive had been announced.

In Baltimore, the Saturday shooting unfolded near a youth football event at Leon Day Park, according to police. Worley said two different types of gun cartridges were found at the scene and that two suspects were being sought.

“What we know is that there was some type of argument between two cowards, and of course they both opened fire on each other,” Worley said at a Saturday night news conference. “The dispute most likely occurred from a stupid parking spot, and they get into a fight, and the two cowards pull guns on each other.”

Worley said the 12-year-old girl who died was a bystander at a nearby field, struck when one of the shooters “fired multiple rounds down range.” She was pronounced dead at the scene. A 25-year-old woman who was with the girl was also shot, as were two men, ages 23 and 28. None of the three wounded victims were believed to have life-threatening injuries, according to police. The two men walked into a nearby hospital with their injuries.

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott addressed reporters at the scene. “Two grown men got into an argument, and now a 12-year-old is gone,” Scott said. “What happened out here today, is one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever seen in my life because that baby was just out here, at homecoming for this youth football league is out here every single day, trying to keep young people safe, trying to keep young men and young women on the right path.”

The two incidents came as the Gun Violence Archive, a nonpartisan research group, counted at least 355 mass shootings in the United States so far in 2026 — through Sunday, the 277th day of the year. The archive defines mass shootings as cases in which at least four victims are killed or wounded.

The United States perennially has high rates of such shootings, fueling calls from some quarters for more substantial federal gun control. Congress has not passed such measures over the years.
