Officials have not confirmed the cause of the death or injuries
One person has died and several others were injured Monday afternoon at Six Flags Over Georgia, reportedly on the Goliath rollercoaster, about 15 miles northwest of Atlanta, according to the Cobb County police department.
A Six Flags spokesperson said the park and local authorities responded immediately and that the company is fully cooperating with local authorities as they investigate. “We are deeply saddened by the guest incident at our park today,” the spokesperson said.
Cobb County officials have not publicly confirmed what caused the death or how the other injuries occurred. Multiple outlets reported, citing eyewitnesses and anonymous local officials, that a person fell from the Goliath. The Cobb County police department did not publicly confirm that account.
The Goliath rollercoaster, introduced at the park in 2006, has a top speed of 70 miles per hour and features a 175-foot drop.
Monday’s fatal incident follows Six Flags’ decision to retire the X2 rollercoaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain in southern California, announced late last month. The X2 closure followed lawsuits alleging the ride caused serious brain injuries, as well as a wrongful-death lawsuit from the family of a 22-year-old man who died after riding the X2 in 2022, which Six Flags recently settled. Three more lawsuits alleging traumatic brain injuries were filed last week.
The X2 and the Goliath are separate rollercoasters at separate Six Flags parks. The cause of Monday’s incident at Six Flags Over Georgia remains under investigation.
