White House asks Guilfoyle to resign as ambassador to Greece
Eric Deters, the Trump donor at the center of the most serious allegation against US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle, told MS NOW that her request for him to pay a $100,000 American Express bill “absolutely was a quid pro quo,” The Guardian reported. Deters told the network he paid Guilfoyle about $300,000 over the years without receiving “one favor.”
The White House on Tuesday morning asked Guilfoyle to resign, The Guardian reported, ending a diplomatic tenure that lasted less than a year. New White House press secretary Katie Zacharia announced the request at her first briefing on Tuesday, misspelling the ambassador’s last name as “Guilfyole.”
“We have asked ambassador Guilfyole to resign, she has been a wonderful asset to the team and we wish her well,” Zacharia said, according to The Guardian.
The decision came after weeks of reporting that Guilfoyle sought payment from a Trump donor in exchange for access to administration officials, The Guardian reported.
The most serious claim, first reported by the Wall Street Journal on 8 October, centers on the Signal messages from July 2025. Citing those messages, the Journal reported that days before her Senate confirmation hearing, Guilfoyle pressed Deters to pay off a $100,000 American Express bill, assuring him the transfer would not show up “anywhere.”
“Honey please I need you to get this done for me today,” she wrote, according to the Journal’s account.
The Journal reported that Guilfoyle offered to use her influence on Deters’s tax and legal problems in return and told him she had contacted the IRS commissioner and the Justice Department on his behalf.
Deters told MS NOW he paid Guilfoyle about $300,000 over the years without receiving “one favor,” and said the request “absolutely was a quid pro quo,” according to The Guardian.
The Journal also reported that Guilfoyle accepted improper gifts and services, made an alleged threat to a host-country official, and promoted the interests of Greek company Aktor during official engagements. A lawyer for Guilfoyle, Jesse Binnall, said she disputes the authenticity of the messages, The Guardian reported.
The decision came after Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were reported to have grown furious over the allegations, according to The Guardian.
The Guardian described Guilfoyle, the former fiancée of Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., as “one of Trump’s longest-standing political allies.” The resignation ends a tenure that lasted less than a year, The Guardian reported.
