CPSC says carafes can break during use; Bodum received 70 reports
Bodum USA has recalled 5.9 million 8- and 12-cup French press coffee makers after glass cracked or broke in dozens of the devices. The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall Thursday and said broken carafes pose a risk of serious burn injuries.
“The carafe can unexpectedly break during use if the glass carafe is damaged or cracked, including by use of a metal spoon to stir the coffee, posing a risk of serious burn injuries,” the CPSC said in a release.
The recalled units share the vulnerability the agency described: a replaceable glass carafe that, if it becomes damaged or cracked, can break unexpectedly during use. At 5.9 million devices across eight model names, the recall reaches the owners of millions of kitchen presses.
Bodum said it received 70 reports of broken carafes, 48 of which caused burns to users.
The recall covers Bodum French press coffee makers with 8- and 12-cup replaceable glass carafes. The affected models are the Bistro, Brazil, Caffettiera, Chambord, Crema, Java, Jesper and Kenya.
The CPSC said the Bodum name appears on the frame and inner lid of most of the models.
The recall notice tells consumers who own the affected models to stop using metal spoons or other utensils to stir coffee inside the glass carafe. Owners can contact Bodum to request a plastic stirring spoon.
