Wiles, the first woman in the role, steps down Monday
President Donald Trump announced Friday that Stephen Miller will become his White House chief of staff.
The same announcement confirmed that Susie Wiles, the current chief of staff, will step down on Monday. Wiles was the first woman to serve in the role.
The president’s announcement covered both the promotion and the departure, confirming that Wiles would leave the post at the start of the coming week.
Miller has served as deputy chief of staff since Trump returned to the presidency in January 2025.
Miller moves to the top staff position from the deputy role he has held throughout Trump’s current term. The Guardian described Miller as Trump’s most controversial aide and the architect of the president’s sweeping immigration crackdown.
The Guardian’s initial report carried no further details about the transition or about Wiles’ plans after she leaves the White House; the outlet said more details would follow.
Wiles’ departure, set for Monday, will end the tenure of the first woman to serve as White House chief of staff. Miller is to succeed her.
