Andy Burnham’s got a ten-year plan to bring back hope. Great. Hope don’t pay the electric bill.
He’s off on a listening tour this week, hitting up the places Labour lost and the places the industry died—Port Talbot, where the last blast furnace went cold in 2024, and nobody’s brought the jobs back. He’s going to stand on a pavement and talk about high streets like he’s just discovered them. ‘Hidden pricing.’ ‘Consumers getting ripped off.’ Fucking hell, we’ve been telling them that for a decade.
And what’s the actual plan? ‘A series of pro-consumer cost of living measures.’ Boxes in the road, I’m sure. The op-ed writes itself—the same promises the Tories made, the same promises Labour made when they took the keys. The poll says 30% of people are worried about the economy and 22% are staring at grocery receipts. There’s your mandate, you twats. Don’t go on a holiday and call it governance.
But let’s not pretend the opposition is any better. Mel Stride’s over there shrieking ‘breathtaking hypocrisy’ while his party’s the one that burned the country down for fourteen years, and his big idea is cutting business rates. And Robert Jenrick, the Reform lad, wants to cut green levies and slash the benefits bill—you know, the money that keeps kids fed. God forbid a single donor’s yacht gets a scratch.
A ‘vanity tour,’ Daisy said. Least she’s honest.
Here’s the thing, Andy. Hope is a word. The rent is a bill. The kids’ shoes are too small. We don’t need you to listen to us, we need you to actually fucking fix something. One concrete law. One number on a page that lowers a bill. Anything but another summer of smiling for the cameras while the cost of living eats the family budget alive. Take your flag, your plan, and your listening ears, and show us a goddamn receipt.
Otherwise, shut up, get out of the way, and let somebody else take a swing at the pinata.
They used ‘hope’ to hide the fact they’re doing nothing. That’s not leadership. That’s a slide show with a heartbeat.
